According to the New York magazine website, a few years back a graphic designer by the name of Tyler Thompson was travelling via the airline Delta and the boarding pass seemed like a hard one to figure out. He observed people struggling to decipher it in the check-in lounge so that the way to the right terminal could be chalked out. Right there and then he took out his laptop and started designing a black and white, simpler and user friendly version of it, which proved key in the systems make-over later.
