Degree mills were
more or less unknown to the people till in 2003, the U.S. Government Office of

The study, “Diploma Mills Are Easily Created and Some Have Issued Bogus Degrees to Federal Employees” revealed that there was literally a multitude of such false diplomas and education scams all over the United States.
A Congressional investigation into this matter revealed almost 400 federal and
local government employees, who had been directly involved in this scam and
bought fake diplomas and degrees with the loan money they received from the
government tuition assistance program.
The investigation presented its findings in 2004, that the fake degree mill market made almost about half a billion dollars per year. However, now that most people know about this scam, very rarely do people get involved in it voluntarily. Most of the time students fall prey to the fake degree scams unknowingly and realize much later that all the money they spent on earning a higher degree has gone to waste. This happened either because they failed to properly check the accreditations of the school they were enrolling in or that they failed to realize the importance of accreditation.

So here is a
guide of accreditations which are accepted not just nationally but
internationally as well. There are basically three kinds of accreditations, regional,
national and universal. Here is a run down on all of them:
Across the United States almost 85 percent of all colleges are regionally accredited. Most of these institutions have national accreditation also but not all of them.

and this is because their accreditations are accepted beyond the confines of regional
geographic areas in which a certain school is located.
The three most popular “national” college accreditation agencies recognized by CHEA are:
